New Media Training for Prison Personnel
Prisons open digital windows to the world with training activities for all!
The European project SEMELI (Socially Excluded youth of Media Literacy), co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme, is organizing a free training seminar for the professionals working in the country’s Detention Centres, on Media Literacy and the role that these professionals can and should play in the digital empowerment of young prisoners.
Taking into account the digital exclusion experienced by young people serving a prison sentence in Detention Centres and the link between digital literacy and their successful social reintegration, the SEMELI project designs and implements a series of training sessions for prison staff, in order to make them allies in the effort to combat the digital exclusion of prisoners. The aim of the seminar is to promote the knowledge of prison staff on media literacy, so that they can become media coaches and help young prisoners to use new technologies wisely and safely.
The training course is forty (40) hours long and is to be implemented online through the project’s training platform. It consists of ten training sessions, for a total duration of 30 hours, and 10 hours of asynchronous learning. The training modules of the seminar are as follows:
- Introduction to the training project
- Introduction the digital transformation: an overview
- Areas of digital transformation
- New media and youth
- Media education and pathologies
- Misinformation and fake news
- Internet, media education and empowerment in the prison context
- Digital windows in prisons
- Media literacy skills in the prison context
- The role of prison staff for prisoners and the development of media literacy
